Our lives contain many facets and among them are some of the most personal and private matters. Our information sets us apart from others and uniquely identifies us. While we all have unique data about us, we also have data that is part of our experiences that is actually shared rather than truly both personal and identifying.
This website is about collecting these shared experiences, the things that we both share and combined form our unique life stories. Our aim is to collect a small subset of life stories that pertain to the LGBT coming out process. This process involves one’s realization of their true identity and contain many facets that are more than likely shared than not.
In order to properly tell people’s stories, we collect fairly specific information that helps us catalog and organize the stories themselves. We use this information to find similar stories to help people find stories that are close in proximity to their own. Although we capture what many would call private information, we do not store any information that links a story with a particular user. We do not have accounts, and we do not have user-set passwords.
We use a hashing mechanism combined with a random number generator to generate story-specific keys that can be used to update / modify a story at a later date. Users can print out this key after adding their story or may enter their email address to receive a special URL that allows them to update the story at a later point in time. We request the story-teller’s email address at this time to only send the link and we do not store, re-distribute, cache, or retain access to the email address provided when a user is entering a story into the website.
Although we don’t associate email addresses with stories that are posted, we do offer the ability for a website visitor to subscribe to a mailing list to find out about new features and stories available on the website. We use third party tools for collecting lists of subscribers and facilitating sending emails to said subscribers. We do not share, publish, distribute, nor make available our mailing list to any outside parties, nor individuals. We may from time to time send an email that is sponsored from a close partner or other non-profit that may provide benefit to our subscribers.
Your stories will be available publicly to the world. Anyone with an internet connection that does not block access to http://story.lgbtq.co.in will be able to potentially read your story. If you keep track of the Key provided after entering a story, you may use said key to remove the story at a later date.
Alternatively, a user may flag a story for one of the reasons in the ‘reporting’ tool. Flagged stories will be reviewed for a violation of the Terms of Service and taken down or prevailing accordingly (one cannot use their personal beliefs to bring down the story belonging to another individual)
